Preparing a Kenya Property for a Long Vacancy: A Remote Owner Checklist

A vacant property still needs management. Water leaks, pests, unpaid utilities and security issues can grow quietly when nobody is living in the unit.

Decide which utilities stay active

Water, electricity, internet and security services may need different treatment depending on the building and length of vacancy. Avoid unnecessary bills without disabling systems needed for inspections or safety.

Create a periodic inspection schedule

Someone should confirm doors, windows, plumbing, electrical systems, appliances and signs of moisture or pests on a predictable rhythm.

Remove or secure valuables

Documents, electronics, cash-equivalent items and easily moved furnishings should not be left casually in a property that may sit empty.

Plan the restart before the next occupant

Cleaning, utility reconnection, appliance checks and small repairs should happen before the next tenant or owner arrival rather than during move-in week.

General educational information only. Property, legal, tax, insurance, leasing and management decisions should be verified for the specific property and jurisdiction.
