Diaspora communities often grieve across countries. A thoughtful memorial can give people space to remember, support the family and connect those who cannot travel home.
Ask the family what support is appropriate
The family’s wishes should guide public announcements, fundraising, photographs and the tone of the gathering.
Make participation possible from more than one place
A livestream, shared tribute page or coordinated time of remembrance can include relatives and friends across countries without requiring everyone to travel.
Separate remembrance from financial pressure
If fundraising is included, state the purpose and collection method clearly. Attendance and emotional support should not feel conditional on giving.
Preserve the tributes respectfully
With permission, photographs, written memories or recorded messages can become part of a family archive after the event.
