Recording Family Histories Across Generations

Family history can disappear surprisingly quickly when stories live only in memory. Recording a few conversations now can give future generations names, places and context that would otherwise be difficult to recover.

Start with open-ended questions

Ask elders about childhood, migration, work, marriage, community, major changes and the people who shaped them. Follow unexpected details instead of treating the conversation like a questionnaire that must be completed in order.

Capture more than audio

Photos, letters, recipes, documents, maps and objects can help future family members understand the stories. Label files with names, dates and locations while someone still remembers what they mean.

Store copies in more than one place

A recording on one phone is not an archive. Keep organized copies in family-controlled cloud storage or other reliable locations and decide who will maintain access as technology changes.

Preserve the stories that connect generations

DLX Diaspora explores practical ways families can document, share and carry heritage forward.
